Acoustic Research 10" Foam Speaker Repair Kit FSK-10A (PAIR)

I replaced both the 10" and 4" foam in my AR48'speakers and while I wouldn't exactly say it was "easy" I would say that it made my old speakers sound like brand new. I called around locally to find out if the job could be done for a reasonable charge and got three quotes. The low-end estimate, and I emphasize "estimate", was $300.00. I re-foamed 4 speakers in about 4 hours, (that includes waiting/drying time) for about $50.00! Best advice I can give - don't panic! The gluing process takes some patience and when the glue starts to stick to your fingers and tools you might freak out a little. I know I did. But just keep working the new foam into place with the old cone and eventually it begins to stick. The main thing is my 80's AR48s sound like a million bucks. I could go on...

Used this kit to refoam a pair of original 1970 AR 2ax 10" woofers. The surrounds fit perfectly and instructions were clear and concise. Shipping was quick and free to boot! I'll be using simply speakers for all my refoaming projects from from here on out!

I purchased the FSK-10A Acoustic Research 10" Foam Speaker Repair Kit for my AR-5A speakers and am very pleased with the results. The viscosity and drying time for the adhesive is appropriate for the application and the foam itself appears to be superior to the original. I would like to make a couple of suggestions however. There are no cut-outs in the foam for the 4 screws that hold the speaker to the enclosure so the foam has to be notched at those locations. I assume this would be true of most speakers, you may wish to provide notches at the correct locations in the foam or instructions to do this with a 1/4" hole punch. I would not recommend cutting a notch with scissors It would have been difficult to attach the foam to the top of the speaker cone due to the angle, the foam sticks straight out and the adhesive does not become tacky for several minutes so I attached it to the underside of the cone edge which the instructions indicated would not affect the performance. That underside edge does have to be cleaned thoroughly to remove the old foam however and I found that a baby wipe dipped in alcohol worked nicely but be careful not to wet the cone material completely. It would have been better if the foam were formed with an angle for attachment to the cone and the speaker frame so that it would lay flat on both surfaces. Not sure if that possible to do in the manufacturing process. Also, it would be helpful to have a new top gasket for the speaker included in the kit as the old ones can be damaged when removing them. I turned mine upside down to insure a clean smooth surface against the new supplied foam. This too would need to be notched for the speaker mounting screws. The foam material is tough and not easy to rip so it should last longer than the original.

After experiencing very muddy bass sounds from our 50 year old AR 2ax speakers we discovered that the foam was gone. The replacement kit was top quality and the video was excellent. We did a perfect repair and the sound is great. We were so happy that we ordered and replaced the speaker cloth. We have NEW speakers!!

I have done one AR 3ax several years ago, and a pair of small Advents. Now the second AR needed a surround. Directions are clear and explicit, everything works as explained as long as you take your time and stop if there's a question. These guys are very helpful!
