Acoustic Research 10" foam repair kit
Used this kit to refoam a pair of original 1970 AR 2ax 10" woofers. The surrounds fit perfectly and instructions were clear and concise. Shipping was quick and free to boot! I'll be using simply speakers for all my refoaming projects from from here on out!

I replaced both the 10" and 4" foam in my AR48'speakers and while I wouldn't exactly say it was "easy" I would say that it made my old speakers sound like brand new. I called around locally to find out if the job could be done for a reasonable charge and got three quotes. The low-end estimate, and I emphasize "estimate", was $300.00. I re-foamed 4 speakers in about 4 hours, (that includes waiting/drying time) for about $50.00! Best advice I can give - don't panic! The gluing process takes some patience and when the glue starts to stick to your fingers and tools you might freak out a little. I know I did. But just keep working the new foam into place with the old cone and eventually it begins to stick. The main thing is my 80's AR48s sound like a million bucks. I could go on...

AR-5 Replacement Foam
I purchased the FSK-10A Acoustic Research 10" Foam Speaker Repair Kit for my AR-5A speakers and am very pleased with the results. The viscosity and drying time for the adhesive is appropriate for the application and the foam itself appears to be superior to the original. I would like to make a couple of suggestions however. There are no cut-outs in the foam for the 4 screws that hold the speaker to the enclosure so the foam has to be notched at those locations. I assume this would be true of most speakers, you may wish to provide notches at the correct locations in the foam or instructions to do this with a 1/4" hole punch. I would not recommend cutting a notch with scissors It would have been difficult to attach the foam to the top of the speaker cone due to the angle, the foam sticks straight out and the adhesive does not become tacky for several minutes so I attached it to the underside of the cone edge which the instructions indicated would not affect the performance. That underside edge does have to be cleaned thoroughly to remove the old foam however and I found that a baby wipe dipped in alcohol worked nicely but be careful not to wet the cone material completely. It would have been better if the foam were formed with an angle for attachment to the cone and the speaker frame so that it would lay flat on both surfaces. Not sure if that possible to do in the manufacturing process. Also, it would be helpful to have a new top gasket for the speaker included in the kit as the old ones can be damaged when removing them. I turned mine upside down to insure a clean smooth surface against the new supplied foam. This too would need to be notched for the speaker mounting screws. The foam material is tough and not easy to rip so it should last longer than the original.

Works great
When I pulled mu uncle's old speakers out of the cabinet I was dismayed to see that the foam in the woofers was disintegrated. At first I thought I would have to replace the woofers but upon doing some research I found this repair kit. The directions were very clear and easy to follow. I now have two excellent working speakers and the price was very reasonable. Great customer service as I received the kit in about 4 days.

Easy install
Brought my AR-2ax back to life. Amazing speakers. Bought mine back in 1972. Already had a shop replace the foam rings back in the 80's. Those lasted until just recently, but only on one speaker. I used this kit to replace the foam on the bad speaker. I viewed some youTube videos on how to remove the old foam to get an idea what I had to do. You do have to be careful in removing the foam from the paper cone, applying any solvent sparingly. Applying to much solvent at once can damage the paper cone. I applied the replacement foam in two steps, first putting the sealant on the paper cone and applied the foam ring to the cone, letting that dry and then putting the sealant on the metal part of the speaker and then gently applying pressure to the foam to seal it against the metal. Before I put down the sealant on the metal I carefully checked and marked where the foam ring lined up on the metal with the speaker cone moving freely up and down without a scratching noise. When you sealing the foam down on the metal part of the speaker it is very easy to get the cone off center, so I traced a ring around the metal part where the foam should meet beforehand. The sealant will soften the foam slightly so you have to be mindful of that as well. Other than that, it's a simple repair. I did notice that the foam in this kit seems slightly stiffer than the foam used by the shop that replaced them the first time and I was worried about it affecting my speaker response, especially since I replaced the foam on one speaker only. However, I can't tell any noticeable difference. Of course I could have replaced the foam on both speakers and making them the same, since the kit has a pair of foam rings, but I figured if the other speaker wasn't broke, why mess with it.
