The most common problem with speakers are rotted, torn or damaged surrounds. The surround is the outer suspension part of the cone. Constant vibration, time and the environment cause foam and rubber surrounds to degrade. Cloth and paper surrounds can become brittle. This causes distortion and poor performance.
Luckily, our easy to install repair kits will make your old speakers sound just like new!
New-Edge-It® speaker repair kits. America's # 1 brand since 1992.

Mr.
I've owned my Allison 1 speakers for about 40 years now; I haven't been able to listen to them for the last 20. I finally broke down and decided to fix them. earlier this summer. I was very nervous about damaging the cones, but the procedure couldn't have been easier. The video tutorial was excellent, and helped to show me the repair was not that difficult. As long as you're patient, it's easy. It took me about an hour to an hour and a half per speaker to get them cleaned. Gluing them couldn't have been easier. Tge adhesive is excellent. It only takes a few minutes to get tacky, and man, is it strong! Just working the cone edge around the surround, and in about 3-5 minutes, it was done. The foam lays against the metal frame, and it's a little tacky on the metal, so they stay in place. Like the video, a thin bead on the underside and some pressure all around and bang- let it dry. I thought if it wasn't perfect, the coil might scrape, but the speaker did all the work and the fit was perfect. The hardest parts of the job was scrubbing the old rubber out from under my fingernails. It was very deteriorated. The other hard part was that Allison puts a foam gasket behind the speaker, so it sits in the cabinet hole and provides a little cushion for the speaker. Getting the gassket and the speaker to line up with the screw holes required some patience. The threads in the cabinet can also pop out if you push the bolt in crooked, so make sure the bolt is lined up before aplying pressure to thread it. Allison also cheaped out a bit with the wire length. There was only a coulpe inches slack in the wires, which made it difficult to work the speaker in and out of the cabinet. Truth be told, I repaired the second speaker without taking the speaker out of the cabinet. Saved me some time and aggravation. Allison's design (short wires, cabinet gasket, and screw holes) are all on Allison, though. The speaker kit was first class, quality materials, and well documented.

Saved my Allison Speakers!
The work involved is really not difficult if you follow the excellent guidance available/provided!. And You Really Don't Need To Shim & Recap - if you work deliberate and PATIENTLY. I'm so overly pleased to have TH ic-20'S back in FULL service and I am so impressed on how much better they sound and do not show any issues with even some high level low frequency bass tests. As such, I will recommend SS to my audio friends if/when they have needs. And in distant future, I now plan to replace surrounds on a number of other older speakers I have had stored who are in need w/o any hesitation. Those include Several smaller NHT (6.5") woofers, passive radiators on my ESS AMT 1D's, Woofers on my sisters Large Advents, and a very small woofer on a unique small 3 pc JBL media system. And I'll also do the surrounds on several 8" & 10" OEM Allison (one .three, and four) speaker woofers. Thankfully, I saved them when I did removal for driver replacements on several Allison Ones/Threes and Fours years ago. KUDOS to Simply Speakers for a great products, most excellent videos, and timely support of my excessive and overthinking questions. They always made me feel like an important client/customer they truly wanted to help vs just another nagging number/person to deal with.

Addendum to previous comments
I found my deteriorated-surround Allison 1 woofers over-sprayed by a sticky black coating that was only slowly attacked by 91% isopropyl alcohol. The coating was too rubbery to dislodge using blade scraping. Judging lacquer thinner (reducer) to be too aromatic (requiring a charcoal respirator) and potentially damaging if spilled where I wanted to work, I settled on an automobile body shop cleaning agent that I had on hand: Axalta Cromax "First Clean" 3900S. (The number hints at former DuPont sourcing.) I suspect 3M Emblem Adhesive remover would have also worked, and would have been available in less than gallon portions. This solvent proved effective without damaging anything. Another point related to the short internal wiring noted in another review: If one has on hand a 2-inch or longer 10-24 machine screw to keep the woofer loosely attached to the cabinet, it is easier to reach behind and pull the spade lugs with pliers. It can also aid reassembly. Be sure to capture the small washers present on each OEM screw. The two woofers in a cabinet are connected in series and in phase. The wire size is not larger than 18 AWG, so one has to wonder about the merit of heavy cable wiring to the units if the distance is short. The closed-cell foam gasket that fits between the woofer frame and the cabinet is very thin. I used several dabs of the surround adhesive to keep it attached to the woofer frame. To avoid tears in the new surround material that could be points os stress, I used a manual hole punch on the 4.5-mm setting to clear the mounting holes of surround, adhesive, and gasket. In spite of my fears, the final glued result did end with a centered cone with no scraping. Nice materials and directions, thanks SimplySpeakerS.
