Bose 901 Foam Speaker Repair Kit

This is the second time I have ordered foam kits from Simply Speakers - the first were for large Advents. I watched the video several times and proceeded. Other than being tedious (I think this is from having to wait to hear the speakers) with 9 cones per speaker, the job is as described. One of the extra surrounds was needed. The speed of shipment was great as was a follow-up email. Thanks again

Bose 802 Foam Speaker - Excellent!!

I've always wanted a pair of Bose 802. Something intriguing about them. Happen to stumble across a pair of Series 1's for a bargain price. All they needed was a good clean up and the foam surrounds replaced. Not having done such a repair in the past, I gained great confidence in tackling the job after watching Sean's video on the procedure and technique. I can't say that I got it right the first time on a couple of the drivers, but, with Sean's guidance, I was able to correct the alignment of the voice coils without damaging the foam's or the speakers. It is a tedious task, but very well worth the time and effort. The quality of the foam is very very high and isn't just some cheapo garbage. The adhesive supplied is incredibly sticky and works great. If you are considering these replacement foams, go for it. Watch the video closely. Take particular attention to how Sean works over the cone to get the alignment just right. Highly recommend both the product and the service.

901 surrounds

I haven't done foam surrounds in almost 20 years, back then the way to do it was to remove the dust cap and shim the voice coil. Simply speakers 901 foam surround kit and online video was priceless and made the job very easy!

Bose 901 restored

Man, I have had these speakers since 1987 and was about to bring them to the curb when I saw this kit online. They sound like new. I got teary listening to the sounds from these speakers. Time consuming job, but sooo worth it.

Good product, ok instructions

I have completed the foam installation on my 901s and am pleased with the final results. It is a great product. However, centering the voice coil is a little trickier than the instructions imply. I wound up with three coils rubbing even though they seemed centered initially. I had to remove those three surrounds and re-install them. Instructions about how to remove them without damaging them would be helpful. (It can be done)

Q: Whats the numberfor the cloth suuround kits and do they noticably effect the sound?

A: The lifetime cloth surround kit for the Bose 901 is part # CLSK-4.5B. They are a bit stiffer than the foam surrounds, so you may want to increase the BASS setting on the Bose 901 active EQ.

A: Liquid Foam Guard is a brush on PVA sealer that protects foam surrounds from moisture and mechanical breakdown. Includes 1 oz. bottle and brush applicator. Goes on white, dries clear, and leaves a slight gloss finish. You can use the MI-3035 adhesive or silicon to re-attach the rear grill.

Q: What would you say the normal life of the foam option would be? 10-15 yrs? I haven’t opened my speakers yet, since hanging from 20’ up in the air. 35yrs old. What is the telltale sign they probably need replacement? Cloth sounds like the easy option, except it appears to affect sound... Do the 1” cone covers also usually need replacing?

A: The foam lasts around 20 years. The cloth is a lifetime material, bit is a bit stiffer material, so some folks like to bump up the bass on the Bose EQ. You do not need to service the speakers unless you hear distortion. The dust caps do not need to be replaced unless they have been damaged, which is very unlikely.

A: The Bose 901 series 1 uses a cloth (not foam) edge design. Therefore, the repair kit is not needed as the surrounds do not deteriorate. Our F-701 replacement driver will work for the Bose 901 if any of your original drivers have failed.
