The most common problem with speakers are rotted, torn or damaged surrounds. The surround is the outer suspension part of the cone. Constant vibration, time and the environment cause foam and rubber surrounds to degrade. Cloth and paper surrounds can become brittle. This causes distortion and poor performance.
Luckily, our easy to install repair kits will make your old speakers sound just like new!
New-Edge-It® speaker repair kits. America's # 1 brand since 1992.

I found a pair of Boston Acoustic A60s in a house we purchased. The foam was shot, but the speakers were otherwise in good shape. From the stickers inside, it looks like they were manufactured in 1988. This was my first attempt at any kind of speaker repair. I ordered the kit, and it arrived quickly. I watched the instruction video several times. The video I watched indicated that there was no need to shim the voice coil to center it -- it could be centered by "feel" and finding the "sweet spot." So I did one speaker by "feel." I then found some youtube videos that showed how to center the speaker using a test tone (60 Hz or so sine wave). You can find a test tone on Youtube - I have an external amp on my computer, so I hooked the second speaker to that before I did the final gluing of the foam to the frame. (I had already glued the foam to the speaker cone.) While the test tone was playing, I moved the cone very slightly to get the best (no rubbing) sound. I found that this was much more accurate than doing it by "feel," and it didn't require cutting out the dust cap and inserting shims. The kit is great, but I would recommend using a test tone to center the speaker voice coil, rather than attempting to do it by feel.

Refoaming Boston Acoustic Speakers
I needed to refoam my Boston Acoustics A60 speakers. I did an internet search and decided to order the kit from Simply Speakers. The kit arrived promptly and contained everything I needed to refoam the speakers. Using the instructions that came in the kit and watching a You Tube video, I was able to complete the task. The speakers sound great again. I would recommend this kit to anyone who needs to refoam their speakers.

Boston Acoustics A-60 Restoration
My Boston Acoustic A-60 (1982 vintage) speakers have been in the attic for 20 years. The surrounds had completely disintegrated. This kit worked perfectly. I did not use alcohol to remove the old adhesive as an Exacto knife made easy work of scraping the old glue and surround off the cones. I used a chisel to scrape the old glue and surrounds off the speaker frame/basket and wiped it with alcohol. Also, I kept the shop vac nozzle close to where I was scraping the cone and basket to catch all the trash. One thing about the glue: a minute after you apply it, the surround will curl up a bit and get wavy. Keep working it and as the glue begins to set (several minutes) it will start sticking nicely and flatten out. I used my finger (not the supplied brush) to spread the glue on the surround before installing it onto cone (just keep an alcohol soaked rag handy to clean your fingers).

BA A70's are back!
The FSK-8 foam repair worked like a champ - my Boston Acoustic A70s sound great. Strongly suggest watching the installation video and pay attention to details (centering of the cone, etc.). Also, I gave the glue ample time to setup (overnight). Your patience will pay off. BTW - I purchased these BAs in the late 80s in St. Pete, somewhere on US 19. Neat that you guys are located there.

I have to admit I was skeptical at first to try to repair my own speakers. However, your instructional videos gave me the confidence I needed to purchase the kit and attempt the fix. My speakers came out perfect and sound great once again. Thank You Simply Speakers.

Q:
I've got some distortion coming from the woofer at higher volume. The foam is definitely in bad shape. Does deteriorating foam typically cause sound problems, or does my speaker need to be replaced?
Asked by:
tavis
- 9/2/2016
A:
When the foam is deteriorated, the speaker will produce buzzing and distortion. Replace the foam and you will be good to go!

Q:
Since the Boston Acoustics A70 is a acoustic suspension speaker, does the speaker have to be secured tightly against the cabinet to create nearly an airtight seal? Are there any gaskets that required between the woofer and the cabinet? Thanks,
Asked by:
Jason
- 7/30/2017
A:
There is a foam gasket attached to the back of the woofer frame which provides the needed seal to the cabinet. When you preform the repair, this gasket will stay in place, so there is no need to replace it.

Yes, you can use the FSK-8 or the FSK-828 kit for your model. This will take care of the buzzing and distortion.

Q:
1. Although the foam ring from my 1981 A70 is dust, how do I know replacing it will fix the problem and its not voice coil or other damage from the ring being in disrepair for such a long time while being used? 2. Why would I need the optional foam guard sealer? 2. Do you sell the rear gasket?
Asked by:
Mark
- 9/23/2017
A:
Test the coil with an ohm meter. It should read between 3 and 5 ohms. If it passes this test, the foam replacement will be all you need. The Foam Guard sealer is an optional item to preserve the life of the foam. Only needed for high humidity or high temp environments. The rear gasket can be re-used. We do not sell this part.
