Porous Dust Caps
These were the caps I was looking for. Or, so I thought. Let me explain. I converted old school, 1981 Peavey, 15" Black Widow woofers into coaxial, two-way drivers. (The early 80's incarnation of the Black Widow, has a 2 3/4" vented pole piece that makes this possible, by gluing a 1" HF driver on to the back of said woofer. Removing the non porous paper cups, and replacing them with these porous, breathable ones, allows the high frequencies to pass thru. However, I miscalculated the size. I needed 5.5" caps. Not 4" caps, which is what these are. So, instead of sending them back, I'll use them on some old JBL 2032H, 15" drivers, once I get around to modifying those. (They have 1" vents that I'll just tap with a thread maker, and screw the 1" horn driver on to them, and use these caps on those. Which are almost equal in size) In the meantime, I epoxied plastic threaded horn adapters onto the front of the Black Widow's magnet structure, (Under the now removed, original paper caps. In order to clean up the look, a bit), and just screwed on a 4" x 4" wave guide horn onto it. They now look and sound incredible. Almost perfectly time aligned. I should have measured the existing caps, instead of just eyeing it. Oh well. But, aside from my flaws, these will do the trick for any poor man's coax project, as they are porous and breathable. Your mileage may vary. Cheers.
